Beginning My Summer Learning Journery

Week 1: In The Beginning

Activtiy ONE: The First Settlers

Māui is a demi god from Māori myths and legends. Here are some interesting facts that I have found out about him.

1. Māui was the youngest of his brothers and was getting into trouble alot.

2. You will not find Hawaiki on a map, but it is believed Māori came from an island or group of islands in Polynesia in the South Pacific Ocean.

3.  There are distinct similarities between the Māori language and culture and others of Polynesia including the Cook Islands, Hawaii, and Tahiti.

I watched the movie Moana where Māui was the demi god who helped Moana save her land. He was very arrogant and stubborn. He has magic powers and could turn into different animals (shape-shifter).

Here is my picture of Māui's life and Journery.

  1. Hi Jorja,

I'm Jade C and I will be reading and commenting on your blog this summer.

Today is the official start day of the Summer learning journey programme! It's wonderful to see your first S.L.J blog post!

First of all, thank you for sharing your special image of Maui and his journey on the waka! It's always nice to see something visual to support your work! I would love to see a lot of images, pictures, or even your own artworks because I am also a visual learner and I love art!

I wonder if Maui needs a special sister like you to support him and be nice to him! Maybe that's why Maui became to be 'stubborn' and 'arrogant', he might have learnt it from his brothers!

I also like the way you described and explained the geography of New Zealand linking to the Maui legend and also giving some facts about Polynesia. Also it's amazing to see that you linked the text with your own personal experience (Moana movie), I would love to read more about you and your personal stories by linking it with the activities!

I can't wait to read and comment your next blog post! :)

    All the best!

    Jade C.

  2. Kia Ora Jorja,

I’m Dani, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. I normally comment on blogs in the Kaikohekohe cluster ( Northland) but I have been lucky enough to get the chance to visit some blogs in the Uru Manuka cluster!

It’s great to see that you have completed the first activity for the Summer Learning Journey. I really like how you have included a image that links well with your blog. Maui showed his shape shifting skills in another myth about him. The myth of him finding his father, he shape shifted into a Kereru so he could travel to the underworld. If you had shape shifting skills what would you shape shift into first?

If you wanted to continue participating in the Summer Learning Journey, you can check out the activities in this link:

    https://sites.google.com/site/summerlearningjourney/weekly-activities

Just copy and paste it into your search bar and it will bring up all four weeks worth of activities. But you don’t need to complete all of the activities and it doesn’t need to be in order either!

I look forward to reading more of your blogs soon! :)

    -Dani
